Mercat, which means "market" in Catalan, serves cuisine inspired by the markets of Barcelona. Catalan cuisine refers to fare from the region of Catalonia, in Northeastern Spain. Barcelona, the Catalan capital, is well known for its dynamic markets where pristine seafood, cured meats and artisanal cheeses are sourced, and tapas is a way of life.
Mercat features an exposed kitchen, chef's counter, jamon and cheese station, marble bar and custom wine loft. Diners who prefer a more casual and intimate setting can sample the hidden tapas lounge downstairs.
"We wanted to create an international style destination restaurant in New York that would showcase Catalan-inspired cuisine in its purest form," said proprietor Jaime Reixach, who was raised in Barcelona. "Our location on Bond Street - providing a spacious dining room with high ceilings and ample seating - makes for a comfortable downtown evening."
Mercat sources ingredients from the finest food purveyors in New York City, served by Executive Chef Ryan Lowder, previously of Restaurant Jean Georges. The chef intends to excite New York City's palette, adding new dimension to traditional tapas and creating awareness of Catalan cuisine and technique. Downtown style service with attention to detail completes the dining experience.
The 75 bottle wine list focuses on all regions of Spain with a special emphasis on Catalonia. A wide selection of Cavas and Sherries is offered in addition to house-made seasonal Sangrias.
